So many. I mean, there’s counting the miles I’ve run. And how fast. And then there’s counting the number of words written, hours worked, dollars earned and spent. And of course, we can’t forget the nagging question: How many glasses of wine did I drink? (or cookies did I eat? or pounds did I gain?) [...]

be prepared

The key to good preparation? Failure. That’s according to Jason Ashlock of Movable Type Management. No, he’s not a web software guy. He’s a literary agent. A modern literary agent. And the first I’ve seen with a real vision for the future of publishing. I like his vision for 3 reasons: It validates my decision [...]

But when you find good advice, it’s unmistakably good. I found mine at the Harvard Writer’s Workshop, a continuing education course for MDs. I attended as a reporter, covering the course for Harvard Medicine. The opportunity fell into my lap on Thursday during a chat with the editor, my friend and colleague Paula Byron. I [...]

I joined Chris and Nancy Obert at Pear Tree Publishing for a local authors book sale and signing event, this time at Zorvino’s Winery. And several of those strangers also [...]

Last week I attended the Haverhill Public Library’s annual book signing and sale. About 50 local authors attended. And about 20 visitors. Based on my experience with promotional events — for example, the 1997 Las Vegas InterOp tradeshow — this seemed a little slow. But according to the other authors, this year’s turnout was great. [...]

“You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” Ah, Bilbo, who would know better than you? I stepped out the other day, as promised, and dropped The Blind Pig off at the library. Then I decided to wander by my local [...]

Yet I still haven’t gone in up past my ankles… (In case you aren’t from around here, the ocean really is cold in New England.) Once you jump in, it’s fine. You stop tip-toeing  and squealing. You also stop waving your arms in the air like a chicken. But instead of jumping in just yet, [...]
